Choosing An Underfloor Heating System

We fit both wet and electric Underfloor Heating systems. Both work well when it comes to heating spaces. There are differences, however, that need to be taken into consideration when choosing a system.

Wet System Underfloor Heating

• Wet system Underfloor Heating is connected to your central heating system and draws hot water from your Boiler.
• Wet pipes are set under the floor. Into screed, between floor joists or in special plates or tiles (depends on the type of floor)
• Hot water from the Boiler runs through the pipes.
• Wet system pipes are surrounded by insulation such as screed, Celotex or aluminium plates.
• The insulation retains and emits heat generated by underfloor pipes.
• The heat emitted from the pipes and insulation heats the room.
• Underfloor heating carries on heating a room for hours after being switched off (from the heat retained by the insulation)
• Wet system underfloor heating is very efficient and cheaper to run than conventional and electric underfloor heating.
• A wet system will work with all floor types such as wood, carpet, concrete, tiles etc.
• Wet systems are more time consuming and more expensive to install than electric systems.
• Wet systems are simple. All working parts are above ground and easy to access in case of an issue.

Electric System Underfloor Heating

• Electric systems are powered directly by mains electricity and don’t require connection to a central heating system.
• Electric coils run under the floor. They are used in conjunction with insulation.
• The coils come fitted on insulated mats placed across the floor, ideal for larger surface areas.
• Electric coils can be set into screed also.
• For smaller spaces or unusually shaped rooms. Loose coils are fitted and shaped appropriately.
• Electric underfloor heating works with all flooring types
• Electric systems are quicker and cheaper to install than wet systems.
• Electric systems are more expensive to run than wet system underfloor heating. They are still, however, an efficient method of heating.
